sad sad sad

sorry been busy the last while.. I'll post some art soon I swear!

but my friend Charlene Chua sent me this link for "artists to make money"

ok I have no problem about stock art. But you have to admit how sketchy that ad looks below.
It's just a plain mockery of any artist who work long hrs and years to develop their skills.

Yeah its hard to get started but I hope nobody falls for this kind of stuff out there.

CS4 add OpenGL drivers= Instant love

ok for the last month and half I have had photoshop CS4. Theres some nice touches.. but I hadn't had the time to get the OpenGL drives enabled for cs4.. in fear of destablizing my system during a job. So today I've finally been able to set that up (after dealing with 4 hrs of trying to get my taxes in order over the phone.... The people I talked to were nice enough.. but it took forever to figure what was going on).

But anyways OPEN GL IS AWESOME.. my machine is running way smoother with my file... the zooms/pans silky smooth. I still havn't tried everything yet.. but the rotating canvas is awesome. IT DRAWS like alias sketchbook (smooth lines!!!! no more jaggies).
I can't get over cs4.

tears of joy.
I'm so happy.

Bruce Lee Vs Iron Man

sorry been a bit busy,
I promise to get some fun art done soon.
But I had to post this... so awesome!
cho
it's in HD too if you like...

Darkstalkers

Well they announced the winners for the darkstalkers from Udon. I was really happy to hear my 3 good friends(Hilary Leung, Ted Kim, Charlene Chua), and super tallented made it into the book!!!!
Congrats guys!

Unfortunately I didn't make the cut. I wish I didn't rush the drawing and jump into painting.
but here's what I did.

I should count myself lucky to have made it into last years.
But congrats to all the winners.

Basement 416, Creative Photoshop (my name isn't Vince Chua)

My friends and I from Basement416 were interviewed in Photoshop Creative Magazine.
Basement416 (is our collective group of illustrators)

members are Christina Ung, Rey Ortega, Charlene Chua (not related or married to), Ted Kim(also not related or married to), and Sanford Kong.

Although Unfortunatetly my name was spelt incorrectly.
My name was spelt Chua. It's spelt Chui...
and I'm not married to Charlene or related!!! (just to clarify!)

I'm going to chapters and pick up a copy soon.
and bring a marker to make corrections at the store.

But Simon Skellon a writer at Creative Magazine. Was really nice during the process and I appreciate the hardwork (I handed in my interview sooo late!). Even after pointing at the small error. At some point he had mentioned making a editorial correction down the road (woohooo mentioned again in another issue of the mag!)

Charlene also did a podcast interview for our group

That Prinny Dood!

Just fitting in some game time before the next project about to start.
I havn't touched any gaming at all this year until yesterday.
I picked up Loco Roco 2 and Prinny.
Prinny is not for the gamer that has little patience.

But it's so frusterating!!!!! but deffinitely deep rooted like the classic side scrollers like Mario, Megaman, Ghost and Goblins.
Thinking it now, the games today seem far too easy compared to the games of yesterday.
But the frusteration, the game is beautiful.

now if I can only locate Disgaea for psp (man is that hard to find.. I regret not picking it up when it first came out!)

Onell Designs

I think this maybe the last time lapse video for the year.

Over at Onell Design, I was very excited they have a new figure out!
Glyos Sarvos!
The new head sculpt is pretty sweet.
I'm hoping when I have time to line up all the army of figures, and take a few quick snaps.

They would make some awesome stalking stuffers!

street fighter crazy

I went Street Fighter Crazy. (I think it was partly due to insominia).
Chunli I wish I had spent a bit of time working on the pose more.
But the colour job wasn't too bad for the time it took.

Unfortunetly I did a few bit of editing to Chunli proportion wise after recording. Hands too big. Arm too long etc oh well...

Wizard Teen Girl

I took a break from the enviroment I was working on. So I decided to do another time lapse sketch.

Spider Cave Mountain.

This something I'll be periodically updating. This image inspired by the novel "Journey to the West". A traveling tale of the Monkey King.
I was thinking of a cool temple/building smack in the middle of a giant cavern/cave would be really cool.
The concept was that it was partly chiseled and built out from the mountain. The bridge is made out of bamboo and rope.

I've uploaded a few of the Work in progress. I'll try to update my progress on this project, and detail out my thoughts as I work on it.

I'm going to find somewhere throw a person in there for scale too. Perhaps in the foreground.

Just a bit more tone into it.... I tried to make the lighting so that the temple/building is just at the opening of the cave...
So I had to narrow down my light to appear that there's a roof.
Now with my tones all laid out I think its time to colour.

Now with the final drawing out of the way.. my eyes nearly went blind. To help separate the image better I had to block in tones for readability.
Anything in the foreground Dark and in shadow... and everything in the back.. light.

More of the bridge worked out. Bamboo was a big part of the construction. I almost did wood planks.. but I remembered typically in whatever area you're in.. you build with whatever materials are in the enviroment. So if you have a bamboo forest.. you're not going to have a tree forest. Thus... no wood planks on the bridge.

I try to construct as much as I possibly can.. I know some bits will be obscured or erased for the bridge... But I lay it in anyways. I find adding these construction details are important. I know it seems like a bit of a waste to put into the construction and eventually erase it.. but I think it helps give it a little more history and believability(yeah I know... you can argue that its building on a mountain).

Slowly detailing on top of my roughs, and adjusting the composition.

This was my intial rough drawing of what I had in mind.

Friday, December 05, 2008

I had a heck of a time trying to do the editing. But it was fun to do.
I was thinking of Leia in my two favorite scenes...
Pose from "help me Obi-Wan, you are our only hope"
and costume... well you know where :P

I totally urge you to pick up this compilation. It has some amazing artists in there.

I also have my favorite page from Charlene hanging up on my wall.
GO GET IT NOW!!!! Well the book... not the page that Charlene gave me (that page is MINE)

More comic booky looking art, based off a friend's character.

I've had this robot sketch sitting for years now. I've always really been fond of the design. So I thought I would ressurect it and give it the polish that I always wanted to give it.
